Fall into Winter Seamlessly with these Minimalist Skincare Tips

Fall into Winter Seamlessly with these Minimalist Skincare Tips - Syll Botanics

You may have seen a lot of “fall weather” skincare posts lately that feel a bit daunting to implement. Although it’s getting colder and drier, you don't have to change up your whole routine or make it complex! Here are some minimalist tips for your whole self that will serve well into winter.

Start Holistically

Now’s the time to break out the humidifier to increase moisture in the air, especially while you sleep. Stay hydrated from within by drinking plenty of water (try a little warm water with lemon and a pinch of salt in the AM if you can’t seem to quench your thirst). Omega-rich fats, like avocado and nuts, are also important to incorporate into your diet to help your skin produce the right balance of oil to feel comfortable and look healthy.

Facial Care

1. Preserve your Skin Barrier

If your skin is feeling dry, look for a gentle cream or oil cleanser. Ditch the foamy ones and alkaline bar soap. Skip the AM wash on occasion and try a warm water rinse instead (it’s good for your microbiome and helps keep your skin’s lipid layer intact).

2. Optimize your Treatment Step

Use a multi-tasking oil serum on damp skin to lock-in hydration to moisturize and treat skin all in one go. Look for nutrient rich products that also strengthen the skin barrier.

The Face & Eye One, for example, has been formulated to improve skin health and address a multitude of issues with natural ceramides, squalane, phytosterols, Vitamin C & CoQ10 and a complete spectrum of Omegas 3, 5, 6, 7 & 9.

3. Moisturize and Protect with SPF

Finish up that bottle of lighter, summertime SPF and swap it for thicker broad-spectrum 30+ that offers increased daytime moisturization. If needed, you can also use a night cream as your final evening step.

4. Gently Exfoliate

Weekly exfoliation is a good cadence. If your skin is sensitive and to avoid photosensitivity – especially if you are pregnant – look for gentle chemical exfoliants like plant enzymes or poly-hydroxy acids. Overdoing it or using harsh products with high levels of alpha-hydroxy acids or nut shell powders can damage your skin barrier leading to increased transepidermal water loss and irritation.

Body Care

1. Trying Cleansing, Lite

We know they feel great on cold days, but try to avoid super hot showers…they are really drying!

Don’t soap all over- seriously! Wash your pits, privates and that’s pretty much all you need – same goes for your kids. Ditch cheap, heavily fragranced bar soap or foamy gel cleaners. You can even use an oil cleanser for ultra dry skin (this is also great for babies to preserve their fragile and developing microbiomes).

Exfoliate weekly w/a dry brush, washcloth or loofah.

2. Nourish & Moisturize

Like your facial skin, feed your body. Try using a high-quality oil blend on damp skin as opposed to lotion, which typically contains 70-90% water and is less nutrient rich.

We are partial to The Body & Hair One because it contains superfoods like acai, blackcurrant, and strawberry seed, alongside actives like hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, and ceramide NP. This concentrated yet gentle formulation makes it extremely effective at keeping skin moisturized and nourished compared to typical lotions or plain body oils.

Hair & Scalp Care

1. Don’t Over(hair)do It:

Can you guess? Yes - most of us don’t need to shampoo everyday! Like with skin, over cleansing can leave hair and scalp dry & dehydrated. Look for creamier, high quality shampoos over clear gels or clarifying options.

2. Add Some Strand Protection:

Dry or coarse hair ends? Apply a protective hair oil or serum after you shower to strengthen and protect hair strands- especially on days you plan to use a hot styling tool.

Take advantage of the multitasking benefits of Body & Hair One. Not only is it a next level body oil, this serum helps strengthen, soften and hydrate hair with biocompatible forms of hyaluronic acid, ceramide NP, squalane and Vitamin C, alongside superfood oils like strawberry, pracaxi and passion fruit.

3. Soothe your Scalp

Dry, itchy or irritated? Calendar in a nourishing scalp treatment monthly. Try applying The Body & Hair One to a wet or dry scalp (and hair), wrap it in a warm towel and relax (or multi-task!) for 20-30 minutes. Do wash it out with shampoo this time.

And there you have it. No rocket science here, but sometimes it’s easy to make things more complicated than they need to be. We hope these foundational tips are easy to implement - and extra helpful - for all you skinimalists out there!
